2.0TD vs 3.0TD: which access tariff applies to you

The difference between the 2.0TD and 3.0TD access tariffs, explained plainly: who each one applies to, how their time periods work and what you can optimise in each case.

When you look at your bill there is a code almost nobody knows how to read: 2.0TD or 3.0TD. It is not the commercial tariff you signed up for with your supplier, but your access tariff (or grid toll): the regulated classification that determines how what you pay for using the electricity networks is structured. Understanding it matters, because it defines which savings levers are available to you.

The basic rule: your power decides

Since the 2021 reform of grid tolls, the dividing line is simple:

  • 2.0TD: supply points with contracted power up to 15 kW. This covers practically every home and many small businesses.
  • 3.0TD: low-voltage supply points with contracted power above 15 kW. This is the territory of medium-sized shops, workshops, restaurants, residential blocks with heavy-duty equipment…

Not sure which one you have? It appears on the first page of your bill, next to the contracted power. If your power is 3.45 or 4.6 kW, you are 2.0TD without a doubt.

How 2.0TD works

2.0TD has three energy periods:

  • Peak (punta): the most expensive hours (morning and late afternoon/evening on working days).
  • Standard (llano): the mid-range price.
  • Off-peak (valle): the cheapest hours — from midnight to 8:00, and all day at weekends and on national public holidays.

It also lets you contract two different power levels (one for peak/standard and another for off-peak). It is a detail many people are unaware of: if you charge an electric car or store heat overnight, you can raise only your off-peak power, which is far cheaper.

Watch out: your supplier may offer you a flat price 24 hours a day even if you are 2.0TD. In that case the grid toll still has periods, but the company "flattens" them in its offer. Whether that suits you or not depends on when you consume.

How 3.0TD works

3.0TD raises the complexity: six energy periods and six power periods (P1 to P6), with a calendar that varies by season and by day. The key points for a business:

  • You can contract six different power levels, one per period, with the sole condition that they increase from P1 to P6.
  • Power overruns are penalised: if your peaks exceed what you have contracted, the bill will show it.
  • The price difference between periods is large: shifting energy-hungry processes to the cheap periods has a direct impact.

In 3.0TD, fine-tuning the six power levels is usually the biggest source of savings — and also the most common mistake, because they get contracted "by eye" and are never reviewed again.

Can you switch from one to the other?

It is not a free choice: your access tariff is determined by your power. If a business on 2.0TD needs to raise its power above 15 kW, it will move to 3.0TD (with its six-period structure and, in many cases, the installation of a maximeter). And the other way round: if you drop below 15 kW, you go back to 2.0TD territory. That is why, before touching your power, it is worth running the numbers — a change of grid toll alters the entire structure of your bill.

What this means for your pocket

If you are… Your savings levers
2.0TD (homes) The price per kWh, adjusting your power, moving consumption to off-peak
3.0TD (businesses) Optimising the six power levels, avoiding overruns, choosing the right offer

In both cases, the raw material for the analysis is the same: your bill. That is where your access tariff, your power levels, your consumption per period and your current prices all are.
